THE BALMAIN REGATTA - 2007

    Sunday, 28th October 2007

The Balmain Regatta is an historic event. It was first held in 1849 and continued until 1934. It was revived in 1994 by the Wooden Boat Association. The Balmain Sailing Club participated in the Balmain Regatta in 1995 and 1996 as one of the Spring Series races. In 1997, it was run as a separate event, jointly organised by the Balmain Sailing Club and the Wooden Boat Association. The Sydney Heritage Fleet (formerly the Sydney Maritime Museum), the Balmain Association and other bodies have joined forces to make the Balmain Regatta the spectacle it was in days gone by.

The Notice of Race and Entry Forms for the Regatta will be also be available from the club. Separate sailing instructions are issued for the Regatta. These will be sent to entrants prior to the event.
As with all Balmain Sailing Club events, the Regatta is open to everyone.

If you have any photographs from previous Balmain Regatta's, email them with a brief description to colcoe@colemancoe.com for uploading to the

Dear Competitors.

Just a quick note to thank all the competitors who came out to race, social sail or just be part of our annual regatta.

The regatta is one of the oldest regattas in Australia and in recent years has become a celebration of Sailing, our Community and a link to the history of Sailing on Sydney Harbour.

The Balmain regatta is not as serious as some other regattas that occur on the harbour, but is still very competitive and I would like to thank all competitors for there friendship, sportsmanship , positive feedback and general support for the Balmain Sailing Club.

This year our Regatta has been supporting Sailability, which is a  charity that promotes and encourages people with disabilities to get out there and sail.

‘Access for all’ is one of there slogans and when you see a child who may be handicapped or disabled, hop off a Sailability boat with a grin from ear-to-ear and see just how much their confidence has been boosted by the sailing experience, you can see what a wonderful charity this really is.

In fact, your individual donations has exceeded $1250 for Sailability and we thank you for your support and generosity for this wonderful charity.

You may not have noticed but two (2) Payne7s from Rushcutters Bay – Sailability and two (2)Access 303s from Dobroyd – Sailability competed in the regatta and performed very well in their classes.

Congratulation to these competitors for making the trip to Balmain and racing, and I hope that your involvement in this years Regatta has given your charity and the sport of sailing for the disabled some much needed visibility.

Dobroyd Sailability requires Volunteers (Sailors, Rescue Boat Drivers and General helpers) on Wednesdays each week,  and if you can assist -  please contact Paul Tayler (0413-555-770) or Paul.Tayler@osr.nsw.gov.au as any help would be appreciated.

In addition, Photos  Afloat was on the waters all day and there are some great photos of the Regatta available on:

We would also like to thank our Sponsors – Cobden & Hayson, Bavaria Yachts, Afloat, Tigers, Rotary, Sydney Boats Sales, David Bray Yachts and all the Balmain Sailing Club Volunteers for there assistance and effort in making the day it was.

Finally, the Balmain Sailing Club is a Community Club run entirely by Volunteers, so thank you for your patients on the day when waiting for the results to be called and published.

I have attached the latest results for your viewing pleasure.  Prior to the Event upto 90% of your Handicap’s were determined in advance by an external party and the rest determined by the BSC Sailing Committee upto, during and after the event. As usual not every one will be happy but the handicaps given were made so that all parties had a fair and equal chance of a place.

Once again, thank you for your support on the day and we hope to see you in our Regatta in 2008.
